When to Visit Mexico: Seasonal Highlights
If you want to make the most of Mexico, February is my top recommendation. Why? It’s outside the high season, the coastlines are stunning, peak Sargasso season has passed, hurricane season hasn’t started, and the cities aren’t too hot. However, Mexico’s vast and diverse landscapes ensure there’s always something incredible to explore year-round. Here are some seasonal highlights to consider:
June to September: Swim with Whale Sharks in the Yucatán Peninsula
This season is perfect for a once-in-a-lifetime experience—swimming alongside the world’s largest fish. Whale sharks migrate to the Yucatán Peninsula during these months to feed on abundant plankton blooms, offering travelers a unique and responsible wildlife encounter.
October to April: Go Whale Watching in Baja California Sur
Witness the majestic gray whales as they migrate to the warm waters of Baja California Sur. This season offers unforgettable encounters with these gentle giants, making it a must for wildlife enthusiasts.

Sayulita Is a bohemian paradise nestled along Mexico’s Pacific Coast, it enchants visitors with its laid-back atmosphere, stunning beaches, and vibrant surf culture. This charming town offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. If you’re looking for a coastal vibe it’s a great option.
Merida
Lastly, Mérida offers a unique fusion of old and new. Its distinct Yucatecan identity reflects a harmonious blend of indigenous Maya heritage and Spanish colonial influence. Known for its safety and welcoming atmosphere, Mérida is a vibrant city where tradition and contemporary life coexist.

Some of the best restaurants, bars, and clubs I’ve ever visited are in Mexico, where ambiance, service, and design are elevated to new heights. The city’s nightlife is equally impressive, offering a range of high-energy clubs and sophisticated lounges. Whereas, in the Riviera Maya, the beachside ambiance adds an extra layer of allure. Ultimately, the budget for your trip depends on your desired travel style. Accommodation options range widely, from budget-friendly stays under 30$ per night to upscale accommodations exceeding 500$. Similarly, dining experiences vary, with options ranging from budget-friendly meals for around 3$ to gourmet meals costing over 30$ per plate.

Getting around Mexico is relatively straightforward thanks to its variety of transportation options. Whether you’re navigating bustling cities or exploring remote regions, here’s a breakdown of the best ways to travel:
Ridesharing Applications
Uber and DiDi are among the most popular and reliable ways to get around, especially in urban areas. They are relatively cheap, safe, and an excellent choice for moving around at night when public transportation may be less frequent. With just a few taps on your phone, you can book a ride and avoid the hassle of negotiating with traditional taxis.
Taxis
In general taxis in Mexico can be a tricky option, especially in cities, where they are generally best avoided due to safety concerns and inconsistent pricing. However, airport taxis are an exception and are often the most straightforward and reliable way to get from the airport to your destination.Uber and DiDi can only drop passengers off at airports but are typically not allowed to pick them up. This makes registered airport taxis a convenient solution upon arrival. At most airports, including Mérida, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara, taxis are regulated, and fares are paid directly at a kiosk inside the airport. The price is fixed based on your destination’s neighborhood, making it a secure and hassle-free option.
Cancun is a notable exception to this rule. Taxi prices there are notoriously high—sometimes exceeding $100 USD for a 15-minute ride. To avoid these inflated rates, consider using a hotel shuttle, renting a car directly at the airport or if you want a budget friendly alternative I would recommend taking the ADO bus from the airport into the city and then calling an Uber or DiDi.The ADO bus, priced at approximately 7$ USD, is designed with travelers in mind. It offers convenient luggage storage beneath the bus and features amenities such as air conditioning, reclining seats, and onboard bathrooms for a comfortable journey. BUs
As mentioned previously Buses are another excellent way to travel across Mexico. The country offers a wide range of bus services, from basic local options to more equipped long-distance ones like ADO. These buses are a comfortable and cost-effective alternative, often equipped with air conditioning, reclining seats, and onboard bathrooms, making them a great choice for travelers who value convenience without breaking the bank
Trains
For train travel, options in Mexico are limited, but the newly launched Tren Maya in the southern regions, (Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche), is changing the landscape. Although still in its early stages of operation, it provides a promising alternative to buses for travelers exploring these areas. Keep in mind that the service is still being optimized, so it’s best to check for updates on routes and schedules before planning your trip.
Driving
If you’re venturing to the south, renting a car can be a game-changer. In areas like Quintana Roo and Yucatán, where attractions such as cenotes, beaches, and Mayan ruins are often far apart, having your own vehicle offers unmatched flexibility. The roads are generally in good condition, and driving is considered safe during the day. However, it’s wise to avoid long-distance driving at night and inter-state travel if you’re unfamiliar with the local driving conditions. Driving in big cities like Mexico City or Monterrey, however, is a different story—chaotic traffic and complex road systems make it best avoided unless you’re an experienced driver in Mexico.
Flights
For long-distance travel, flights are often the most efficient option. Mexico is a vast country, and local flights make it easy to cover significant distances quickly. The three main airlines—Viva Aerobus, Volaris, and AeroMexico—offer different levels of service and pricing. Viva Aerobus is the budget-friendly option, yet it consistently delivers reliable service with competitive luggage policies. I’ve flown with them around 50 times and have always had a positive experience. AeroMexico, on the other hand, is the most premium option, ideal for travelers seeking extra comfort.
Language
Mexico is a linguistically rich country they recognize over 68 Indigenous languages and more than 350 dialects . Despite this diversity, Spanish is the official language and is spoken all over the country.
If you’re traveling to tourist hotspots like Cancun, Tulum, or Playa del Carmen, you’ll find that English is widely spoken. Many people working in restaurants, hotels, and tour companies are accustomed to communicating with international visitors, so you’ll have no trouble getting by without speaking Spanish.
However, stepping outside of these touristy areas or venturing into local markets, smaller towns, or less tourist-oriented attractions often requires a basic understanding of Spanish. Even in tourist zones, knowing a few key phrases can go a long way in making your trip smoother and more enjoyable. Simple expressions like “gracias” (thank you), “¿dónde está…?” (where is…), “¿cuánto cuesta…?” (how much is…), and “quiero…” (I want…) can help you connect with locals and navigate day-to-day interactions with ease.
