You’ll need to take a plane to reach Madeira. Most of the major European cities have direct flights to Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC).
From Canada, there are no direct flights, so you will need to make a stop in Europe – the easiest being Lisbon or Porto. From Lisbon, the flight is about 1h50 with tickets as low as $CAD 90 (but can go up to $CAD 300).
Public Transport
Public transport is available but limited. Buses mainly operate in Funchal and nearby areas, while routes to more remote parts of the island are infrequent. If you rely on buses, expect long wait times and slower travel.
Car Rental Tips
Renting a car is the best way to explore Madeira at your own pace. Many top attractions are spread across the island, making driving the most flexible option. However, be prepared for steep and winding roads. If staying in Funchal, opt for a smaller car, as the narrow streets can be challenging to navigate.

Funchal & Surroundings
Mercado dos Lavradores
This indoor market had me wandering around for hours! You can find everything: fresh fruits, flowers, pastries, wine, and fresh fish. The setting is aesthetically pleasing, with the basket of colorful fruits and the inside/outside amenities. The only downside is that everything seems slightly overpriced. Still, it’s worth the visit to explore, and you might find a hidden gem!
Monte Palace Tropical Garden
I absolutely LOVE botanical gardens, and this one makes no exception! It even has a bonus feature: the garden is locally higher in the city giving stunning panoramic views. It is a must-add to your itinerary for a peaceful break during a hectic travel day.
Cable Car to Monte
This attraction is a 2 in 1: transit with a view. While the cable car is technically public transit, the price reflects more of a tourist attraction (€20 roundtrip). You will definitely get amazing views of Funchal, while getting to the top of the city, plus it leaves you right beside the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
In my opinion, you can totally skip this activity, and grab a bus for a much better price.
Toboggan Ride
Heading back down to the old town of Funchal? Take a thrilling traditional wicker basket ride down the streets. It is a pricey experience (€35 for 2), but it is unique, slightly scary, and fantastic! I mean, where else can you be pulled in a basket with no wheels and brake by two men?
Natural Wonders
Pico do Arieiro & Pico Ruivo
The Pico to Pico hike was one of my favorite activities in Madeira! It strikes the perfect balance between challenge and reward, offering breathtaking views—especially when clouds float just below the peaks. As one of the island’s most popular trails, it attracts plenty of hikers, and now I see why! To avoid the biggest crowds, an early start is best, plus you get to witness a stunning sunrise. Keep in mind that this is a full-on trek, which may be demanding for beginners. If you plan on hiking from one peak to the other and back, set aside up to seven hours for the journey.
Fanal Forest
This forest will make you think you are in a fairytale world! The clouds and fog, and the old sparse trees created a magical and mystical feel to the place. Whether it is sunny with blue sky or rainy and cloudy, you can enjoy a serene walk around the park.
Ponta de São Lourenço
This trail is another must-see if you plan a travel to Madeira Portugal. It is a moderate trail with views of dramatic coastal cliffs and deep blue ocean. You can decide if you just want to enjoy the view or it you want to walk to the end of the trail (3-4 hours). There are also access to the sea along the way so don’t forget your bathing suit for a refreshing break!
Porto Moniz Natural Pools
Wondering where you can spend a relaxing day by the sea? Porto Moniz Natural Pools is the place to be! These natural sea pools formed by volcanic rock is unique and spectacular. Bring your towel, and sunscreen and enjoy a relaxing day! There is a €3 entry fee and a €5 parking if you are going by car. There are many amenities on site like lockers, restrooms, restaurants and cafés.

Hiking the Levadas
A great way to explore Madeira is by hiking along the historic and famous irrigation channels. These trails are paved and flatter making an easier hike in scenic dense forests. Some of the popular trails are: Levada do Risco (PR6), Levada Fajã do Rodrigues (PR16), and Levada do Caldeirão Verde (PR9).
Praia do Porto do Seixal
Looking for a free version of the Porto Moniz natural pools? Praia do Porto do Seixal is for you! On one side you have a beautiful black sand beach giving Jurassic Park vibes. On the other side, you’ll get two beautiful and nice natural pools. There is also a restaurant and café next to the pool, making it a perfect spot for a full afternoon by the water.
Explore Traditional Villages
Curious about Madeira’s history? Add one of these traditional towns to your itinerary. In Santana, you will discover triangular thatched houses, green hills and flower. As for Câmara de Lobos, you’ll find a charming fishing village with colorful boats, an harbor and waterfront cafés.
